President Muhammadu Buhari Nigerians who had probably waited to hear a bombshell from President Muhammadu Buhari as he addressed the nation this morning must have been shocked. This was the observation of journalism teacher, Dr. Mao Austin, in an analysis monitored on Radio Nigeria. Austin said Buhari’s speech was “well and okay, having taken care of Nigerians’ concerns about the state of the nation, especially the insecurity and agitations for the renegotiation of national unity. He noted that Nigerians must have been shocked that the President did not address the issue of cabinet reshuffling, saying he might look into that as he settles down to work. Austin also expressed the hope that Buhari would ‘tackle’ those who undermined Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who had acted as the president during his absence. Outcome of meeting between Asuu and Federal Government

A meeting between the Nigerian government and university lecturers has ended without a resolution of the nationwide strike called by the union on Monday. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, began a nationwide strike this week, over demands for improved funding of universities and welfare of lecturers. An earlier meeting with the government was also unsuccessful. Thursday’s meeting began at exactly 3:42 p.m. in Abuja. In his opening remark, the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, said ASUU did not follow the proper procedure before starting the strike. “There must be a mandatory letter of 15 days to labour, to education before going on strike,” he said, referring to the ministries of labour and education. “All agreements are supposed to be domiciled in ministry of labour in order to track implementation as agreement gives room to renegotiation,” Mr. Ngige. Facebook expands fight against fake news

Facebook said it is more broadly rolling out a Related Articles feature that helps people identify fake news, assisted by updated machine learning technology which is better at detecting hoaxes. Well after the Presidential election, when Facebook faced scrutiny for enabling the spread of fake political news, the social network is continuing to take new steps to combat false information across its app. Facebook announced it is more broadly rolling out and improving its “Related Articles” feature to help minimize the circulation and impact of false and misleading stories in peoples' news feeds. Using updated machine learning technology, Facebook said it can now identify a higher volume of potential hoaxes on the social network and direct them more quickly to a group of third-party fact checkers.
